Gas or battery: which nailer for framing?

The three VIPER framing nailers deliver 110 J and drive nails from 50 to 90 mm. What changes: the energy source, the batteries and what you need on site.

What does not change

The catalogue has three framing nailers: the gas-powered BlazeFang 110G TitanFire, and the StrikeFang 110W Titan and StrikeFang 110W Flex on a 20 V battery. All three have the same driving power, 110 J, and the same length range, 50 to 90 mm, for timber structural work: framing, walls, plates, rafters.

So the difference is neither power nor nail length: it is the energy source, and what that means for how the site is organised.

Gas nailer: BlazeFang 110G TitanFire

The BlazeFang 110G TitanFire runs on a gas fuel cell and an ignition battery. Its manual states 3.55 kg bare, 3.82 kg with battery and fuel cell, a 57-nail magazine, a Viper VX 7.4 battery (Li-ion 7.4 V, 1.5 Ah) charged in 120 minutes, and a rate of 2 to 3 nails per second, 1,000 nails per hour in continuous use.

Gas is an energy consumable in its own right: Viper Venin fuel cells come in four sizes (36, 50, 70 and 80 ml), propane / butane. Check the fuel cell dimensions on the machine.

20 V battery nailers: StrikeFang 110W Titan and Flex

The StrikeFang 110W Titan (53-nail magazine) and StrikeFang 110W Flex (38-nail magazine) draw their energy from a 20 V battery, with no fuel cell. Three batteries are in the catalogue, VX 20-20, VX 20-40 and VX 20-50, with a single charger, the VX CHG 20, which recharges in about 40 minutes.

There is no energy consumable to replace: the only thing to plan is battery rotation.

How to decide

Two objective differences separate the two solutions. The energy consumable: a fuel cell to replace on the gas side, none on the battery side. Charging time: about 2 hours for the gas nailer's VX 7.4, about 40 minutes for the 20 V batteries on the VX CHG 20 charger.

Weight, firing rate and real-world autonomy depend on configuration and use: the available figures are those on each machine page, with no extrapolation. In both cases, the structural nails are then chosen according to the service class of the structure.
